A
. Vatsalya Vocational Training Centre and B. Vatsalya Women, child and Youth Development Centre were started on at Vatsalya mandir, Jwala Nagar .
Vatsalya Mandir Vocational Training Centre and Vatsalya Women, Child and Youth Development centre’s activities centered around its objectives of promoting and protecting all matters relating to development of women ,adolescent girls and children. Various programmes of capacity enhancement for the target group women , adolescent girls and children were organised during these years. It is an undisputed fact that women plays a vital role in welfare of the family/society irrespective of her level of education. But if she is educated even up to class Vth , her contribution is tremendous. It is also a fact that girls are unprivileged and are deprived of basic necessities like food, educational and vocational skills. They are married off very early and thus early child bearing is inevitable. Both these centres have worked to strengthen this very fundamental role of empowering women through various health, vocational, educational and social programmes .
During last six years the following development programmes of girls, children and women were strengthened.
- Preparatory school for preschool children (Balwari Junior)
- Coaching centre of slum children to help with their home work as they are first generation learners (Balwari Senior).
- Literacy classes for school dropout children. These children are encouraged to enroll for open school – 10th and 12th.
- Vocational Training courses
- Development of Entrepreneurship skills formation of SELF HELP GROUPS.
- Health awareness Generation on different relevant reproductive and sexual health issues for students
- Healthcare and Nutrition programmes from students family and the community .
- Special courses for Adolescents.
-Personality development courses / “Life skill” workshop
- Adolescent Health Workshops
- Self Defence Courses - ( Matri Shakti Shivirs) for students and girls in
community.
- Environmental issues including energy conservation/green Delhi – Each child should plant one tree.
- Participation of the Members/Teachers/Volunteers in Anaemia Camps and health workshops

Arogya Samudaik Swasthya Pariyojana was launched in Jan 2005 with the hope that these Basti Sevika will become bridge between slum people and doctors as Delhi’s 50% population is residing in slums and illiterate, specially regarding their health . There is large unmet need. Certainly not something to be proud of. This Basti Sevika training progormme contributed in big way in Movement Against Anaemia, which is really praise worthy. It was taken in big way under leadership of Dr. Sharda Jain (Chairperson, women wing of Indian Medical Association) and her team by organizing
- Anaemia Detection camps
- Nutrition advice in relation to improve Hb level
- Supply of Iron Folic acid from time to time.
- Re emphasizing the value that Hb of girls - should not be < 12 gm%
- Re emphasizing the value that Hb of boys should not be - < 13 gm%
- Hb detection was source of earthing for these girls.
Under the leadership of Dr. Sharda Jain over 1 lac cases were screened for Anaemia in Delhi slums , MCD schools, private schools and in middle class resident societies and community .Most where these girls were residing. All these girls traine by Vatsalya Vocational Training Centre picked by NGOs for family planning and child care programme to motivate women and families in community.
Volunteers from Delhi Gynaecologist Forum and Indian Medical Association look initiative in organizing these courses. Our work was presented at different forums and government adopted this progrmme in big way introducing ‘Asha’ training under NHRM and utilizing the services of these basti sevikas. More than 2 dozen doctors have agreed to see slum women on nominal charges of Rs.20-50. Thus rendering good service for slum women children. Once the government has become active, we had withdrawn this activity of train of in 2006 |
