Anaemia Campaign & VATSALYA Activities

ANAEMIA
Arogya  Samudaik Swasthya Pariyojana was launched 2003 with the  hope that these Basti Sevika will become bridge   between slum people and doctors as Delhi’s 50% population is residing in slums and illiterate, specially  regarding    their health . There is large unmet need. Certainly not something to be proud of.  This Basti Sevika training progormme contributed in big way in Movement Against Anaemia, which is really praise worthy. It was taken in big movement  under leadership  of Dr. Sharda Jain   and her team by  organizing
Four batches have been trained in 2003-2004
  1. batch  – 54 women working with Seva Bharti, Ujjwal Women’s
    Association, , Vatsalya Projects, Caring foundation)
  2. batch – 14 girls
  3. batch – 16 girls and boys
  4. batch – 8 girls

Joint activities of Vatsalya community project started

  • Anaemia Detection camps
  • Nutrition  advice in relation to improve Hb level
  • Supply of Iron Folic acid from time to time.
  • Re emphasizing the value that Hb of girls -  should not be < 12 gm%
  • Re emphasizing the value that Hb of boys - should not be < 13 gm%
  • Hb detection was  source of earthing for these girl
  • Anaemia Detection camps

Under the leadership of DR. SHARDA JAIN  OVER 1  LAC CASES were screened  for Anaemia in Delhi slums , MCD schools, private schools and in middle class resident societies and community .Most of these girls  have been picked by NGOs for family planning and child care programme to motivate women and families in community.
Volunteers from Delhi Gynaecologist Forum and Indian Medical Association look initiative along with Basti Sevikas trained by Vatsalya Vocational Training Centre in organizing   these ANAEMIA CAMPS. Our work was presented at different forums and government adopted this ANAEMIA ELIMINATION progrmme in big way and also introducing  ‘Asha’ training under  NHRM and utilizing the services of these basti sevikas.All of our basti sevikas are empoloyed    

 

Do You Know few facts about anaemia?

  • India leads in iron deficiency anaemia in world.
  • Over 90% Indian women, adolescent girls and children are anaemic.
  • Anaemia results in physical weakness and increased vulnerability to innumerable disease.
  • Anaemia can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes and even mother’s death.
  • Anaemic mothers bear anaemic children.
  • Anaemia not only affects children’s academic performance but hampers their linear growth and development.

The way out

But all is not lost still. By empowering rural and urban poor population through health awareness campaigns, proper diagnosis, capacity building, providing basic health facilities, nutritional food & health supplements and treating anaemia, we can largely overcome the problem of anaemia.

Take care of five As
Ask: What is your Haemoglobin (Hb) ?
Advice: What it should be?
Assess: Your Current Hb.
Assist: Provide counseling, hoe it can be treated (diet + iron-folic acid
supplementation + deworming).
Arrange: Weekly iron folic-acid (IFA) supplementation under direct
supervision.
Definite follow-up programme.

Aim should be to gain upto 12 gms in 12 months

  •  We are still very active in Public awareness programme through Anaemia camps at Jwala Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, Schools around our centre.
  • Anaemia detection  and treatment camps are regularly done at our school  every 2 months
  • Awareness programme for parents of students and  Jwala Nagar community
  • Visiting our vatslya mandir is done every 1st Thursday of the month
  • We regularly give deworming tablets and iron folic acid tablet to our student and staff
